1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

The article examines how those in power use media to uphold and reinforce their ideologies.

2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?

The films highlight the contrast between the wealthy, who live in luxury, and the poor, who struggle with poverty and oppression, mirroring the inequalities we see in the real world.

3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological beliefs?

The Hunger Games films suggest that media can be a powerful force, capable of shaping and controlling dominant beliefs and ideologies.

4) What is YOUR opinion on this topic? Do you think the media shapes our values and beliefs?

I think the media definitely plays a big role in shaping our values and beliefs, often reinforcing dominant ideologies. However, with the rise of social media, there are new challenges and opportunities for different perspectives to emerge.

1) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?

  • consumer goods- fulfilment

  • marriage/family/children- happiness

  • money- happiness

  • work- fulfilment

2) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?

Gramsci argues that those in power maintain control in society by getting their ideas accepted as common sense, so people go along with them without needing to be forced. This allows the dominant class to stay in control more subtly.

3) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

The elite class promotes the idea that happiness comes from owning material things. This belief fuels consumerism, helping them make more money by encouraging people to constantly buy more.

4) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!

I agree with the message of They Live as the media often pushes consumerism and capitalist ideas in ways that we don’t always notice.

The media has the power to inform the public, keep those in power accountable, and help people make informed decisions.

2) What are the hallmarks of a free and healthy media landscape?

3) What risks are identified that threaten a healthy media environment?

The risks could be political interference or misinformation.

4) What is YOUR opinion on how the media can be safeguarded to protect democracy? You may want to think about ownership, regulation, technology or public service broadcasting here.

To protect democracy, I believe we need stricter rules around media ownership and more support for public service broadcasting.
