Introduction to feminism

 Everyday Sexism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project because she wanted other men and women to share their stories of when they felt that there was a gender imbalance. This is because she wanted them to feel a sense of solidarity and the fact that they are not wrong for feeling a certain way.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

It confirms that feminism is still needed now and that we're not in a post-feminist time because women still face discrimination and harassment.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

This is because through the use of the internet, the website was able to get more attention and raise more awareness.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

Realistically, I don't think that there'll be a time in the future where the Everyday Sexism project is not required because there will still be people that put men and women difficult situations. However, I do think that there will be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project will not be needed as much because things can get better.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

Networked feminism is the online mobilisation and coordination of feminists in response to sexist, misogynistic, racist and other discriminatory acts against a minority group.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?

First wave: early 20th century (Suffragette movement)

Second wave: 1960s-1990s (abortion, equal pay)

Third wave: 1990s-present (empowerment, reclaiming of femininity)

Fourth wave? 2010- onwards (use of technology for activism)

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday Sexism: The project was started by Laura Bates back in 2012 as a website which posted examples of sexism that users faced every day. Laura set it up after finding feminism hard to talk about, saying: ‘Again and again, people told me sexism is no longer a problem – that women are equal now’.

This Girl Can: The term doesn't represent feminism as only for females 'This is not solely a
‘make the men wrong’ approach,’ says Lee Chalmers at Feminist Times. This inclusive idea of feminism is
nowhere better summarised than by the He For She campaign led by Emma Watson.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I think that digital media has empowered feminism by making voices be heard. While the Everyday Sexism project reflects the third wave of feminism, it also signals a new era. The fourth wave is distinguished to the third wave through its use of digital platforms for activism and solidarity.
