Audience theory 2

  1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?  I think that media can be responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence because younger people who view violent things on the internet may be easily influenced therefore, causing them to imitate what they've watched. However, the media can't be responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence because having violent images/games on the internet is normalised nowadays therefore, society can't blame the media when people become violent due to watching something violent online. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. Social learning theory is still extremely relevant in the digital age because there are many things that mostly young people learn through the internet. For example, peopl...

Hypodermic needle model 1)  How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?  This article links to the hypodermic needle model because it is suggesting that playing "violent" video games can increase/encourage aggressive behaviour. This links because the media is injecting information into the audience like a hypodermic needle which can therefore have a dangerous effect on us. 2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page?   This links because the media is injecting exaggerated pieces of information into the audience all at once which can create a negative effect. Some may criticise this front page as there are two completely contrasting pieces of information on the same page ( 1 could be seen as serious and the other not so much) and people can assume that the media is using this celebrity's dramatic life as a way for ...

Audience classification

  1) Media Factsheet 1) How is audience defined in the Factsheet?  The audience is the general term for all the individual people who consume a media product. 2) What does the infographic for Gen Z in the age of Covid-19 suggest about the media Gen Z consumes?  The infographic for Gen Z in the age of Covid-19 suggests that they consume more media than others because it's mostly used to watch videos online. 3) How do media companies target and measure their audience in the digital age?  Media companies target and measure their audiences in the digital age through the choices of platform, scheduling or algorithm. Many media companies rely on the services of another organisation to tell them who consumes their products, and the companies that collect this data may be the host service in the case of a web or digital text, sales analytics, or a specialist company who collect data about who is purchasing print media or watching specific TV programmes. 4) What did the NRS use...

Assessment 1: Learner response

  1) WWW: Start well with a solid Q1.      EBI: Don't leave questions blank (Q3).              Focus on the question more in Q2 on social and cultural contexts. 2) Points I've missed out on for each question:     Q1: Excellent and judicious use of the theoretical framework (media language and narrative theory) to analyse how a poster uses narrative codes.     Q2 :Good Knowledge and understanding of the influences of social and cultural     Q3: understand and have good knowledge of the influences of genre on media audiences and industry and supported with examples. 3) Read this  exemplar response  from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams).  Identify at least  one  potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper ...
