Narrative

 1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium. An example of a film that uses Todorov's narrative structure is 'Wallace and the Gromit in he Curse of the Were-Rabbit ' (Parks and Box:2005).

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
The opening of this movie 'It' uses
low-key lighting to perpetuate an intense atmosphere which allude to the storyline of this movie. Perhaps, the effective use of under lighting creates a sinister feeling for the audience as the darkness connotes crime, death and mystery.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
.'The day after tomorrow'
.'Lord of the rings'
.'Spiderman'

4) Give an example of a binary opposition. One example of binary opposition is when a police officer captures a criminal in a crime drama. The ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised.

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values? One example is when the girl wins the heart of the guy in a romantic comedy as the values of heterosexual relationships and monogamy are reinforced.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences? This is because these codes create mystery, suspense and tension. They effectively engage audiences by proposing questions or unfinished actions that await resolution.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series): a narrative divided into multiple episodes
  • Overarching narrative (the serial): a unifying storyline that connects multiple episodes or storyarchs with a larger framework, giving coherence and depth to the overall experience.
  • Mixed narrative: doesn't follow the rules completely for conventional narratives that have a linear structure, an overarching story arc and a single point of view.Instead it tells a story within an story by using multiple narrators.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative): The narrative structure in TV shows and movies do not always follow one storyline.
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?  It suggests that advertising the problem and the solution is crucial as they set up a problem and then immediately offer a solution to create a swift resolution. For example, advertise bad breath (problem) and use toothpaste (solution) which gives good breath (resolution).
