Reading an image - media codes

 

                              

                              C- The man is wearing a hat with a camouflage pattern on it which connotes to a                                           war/battle zone. This effectively suggests that no matter how rough your starting                                     point is, you can always succeed and be better.

                              L- The image of 50 cent has low-key lighting and top-lighting which emphasises                                           sunken points of his face and darkens his eyes while highlighting the highest                                             points of his face. 

                              A-The use of this lighting actively portrays the idea of him being                                     serious and perhaps angry about the fact that his past doesn't define him as well                                       as his journey of redemption.


                             M- There is no makeup/hair shown. 

                             P-     

                             S-  The setting is very dark which demonstrates how serious the issue of ‘past doesn’t matter’ is.     


                               

                           C- The man in the image is wearing casual/everyday clothing which can help the                                     audience to relate to the man in the image and spread the message it is portraying.

                           L- The lighting in the image is low-key as there are high contrasting shadows on the                                 man which can demonstrate the violence of a car crash which alludes to the message                               that is being spread.

                           A- The man's facial expression is scrunched as he is getting punched in the face. The                               harsh facial expression creates an atmosphere of anger and guilt.

                           M- There is a car painted on the man's face as well has the man's hand which portrays                             the vision of a car crash. The audience can relate to this more because people usually                               know the pain of a punch let alone a car crash. Therefore, they will be more likely to                               listen and spread the message.

                          P-

                          S- The setting is a plain dark background which can allude to the connotations of                                      violence and danger. This will allow the audience to take this message much more                                    seriously.

Genre blog tasks

  1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? This is because genres are recognisable through the repeated use of generic codes and conventions ( audience recognises as shared characteristics of a genre). Codes and conventions come from iconographies (specific visual or aural media language choices). 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?  For example ,in a soap opera it wouldn't be unusual to see one of the storylines follow a family having to deal with a domestic situation ( a family member having trouble with their boss at work).
